The Old Curiosity Shop – Works Complete

Sykes recently completed works to the 16th Century, Old Curiosity Shop.

Working closely with Dolmen Conservation & Joinery, Sykes carried out extensive structural carpentry repairs, utilising Douglas Fir and Oak to match existing wall plates, rafters, and the like. The sash windows were refurbished, retaining any viable sections within the new. A number of timber repairs were carried out the facia and shop front sections.

The existing and heavily deteriorated roof tiles were replaced with handmade Keymar tiles to match the existing, along with lead and slate supplementary roofs. Traditional brick and render repairs assisted in reintroducing integrity and preventing water ingress. New gutters and cast-iron hoppers were replaced to support the water run-off and get it away from the shop’s envelope.

Following careful paint analysis, a late 19th century scheme was selected, with intricately matched sign writing by Sykes’ specialist decorators.

The works had been challenging but very rewarding.
